What is Art Therapy?

As defined by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), "Art Therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.

Art Therapy, effectively supports personal and relational treatment goals as well as community concerns. FAQs

Do you offer in person sessions?

No. All sessions are virtual and conducted over HIPPA compliant zoom.

Can I stop therapy at any time?

Yes! It is within your right to end therapy at any time. Should you want to end therapy with me, I ask that you commit to a final session to review your progress and make sure we are setting you up for success with whatever you are needing next. That being said, whether you decide to have a final session with me is optional and completely your choice.

What does an Art Therapy session look like?

The session will start with traditional talk therapy to get a sense of where you are at emotionally and what challenge you are wanting to focus on. I will then provide a tailored creative prompt that is relevant to whatever challenge you are wanting to explore. You will then have about 20ish minutes to work on this prompt via creative expression with whatever materials you have in your space/are comfortable working with (drawing, writing, collage, etc). Afterwards, we will reflect on how the process went for you and help you find clarity. During our initial phone call, I will share more about what I offer and will ask about your interests to help you decide who would be the best fit.

How long does therapy take?

The length of therapy varies completely based on your unique needs and goals. Some clients work with me for just a few months, while others continue for years. You might come consistently, take breaks when needed, or return when life brings new challenges—there's no single right way to do this.

I'm here to support whatever approach works best for you, and we'll figure that out together based on what you're hoping to address. There's never any long-term commitment required, and you're always free to pause or stop whenever you feel ready. I fully support you making the choice that's right for you, and I'm always open to discussing your thoughts about continuing, pausing, or ending our work together.

Can you guarantee that therapy will help me?

Therapy works best when you're actively engaged in the process, though I understand this isn't always easy. Exploring difficult experiences or emotions can sometimes feel uncomfortable—you might encounter feelings of sadness, anger, or anxiety as we work through things together. This is a normal part of healing, and I'll be there to support you through it.

While I can't guarantee specific outcomes or promise quick fixes, I can promise to walk alongside you with genuine care and attention. Together, we'll work to understand the patterns in your life and help you gain clarity about what you truly want for yourself. The pace and depth of change will ultimately be guided by you.

Do you offer Biweekly sessions?

For new clients, individual sessions meet on a weekly basis. The therapeutic process works the best when it is frequent and consistent. This is also to ensure you are getting the best level of care from the start. After working together, should unexpected life circumstances arise, talk to me, as this can certainty become an option in the future.

Do I or my child need to have any artistic experience to do Art Therapy?

Not at all. You can come to therapy just as you are, whether you have never picked up art supplies in your life or are a seasoned artist. Art Therapy is about emotional expression and the creative process instead of the focus being on skill and expertise.

What do I need to bring for an Art Therapy session?

Any art supplies of your choice. I do not expect you to go out and buy art supplies (unless you want to!) Paper, markers, colored pencils, paint, (materials with color) are always a good place to start!

What can I expect from the therapeutic process?

Therapy offers you a safe, confidential space to explore what's weighing on you and develop new ways of understanding yourself and your experiences. Through our work together, you'll gain clarity about patterns that might be holding you back and discover tools to navigate life's challenges with greater confidence.

Taking this step to prioritize your mental health shows real courage and self-awareness. You're already moving in the direction of positive change.
